Cupolas, those ornamental structures that sit on
the rooftops of buildings, can be as large as a
room or very small. Most often they are small
additions to suburban homes. They add a historic
touch to a structure and larger ones are often
found on government buildings. They can also be
added to a garden gazebo.
A pre-made cupola designed to be attached to
your roof can be bought in a kit. You may have
to do some work on your roof, however, to attach
the structure. Depending on the size of the
cupola and the quality of the kit, the amount of
work required ranges from moderate to extensive.
Some cupola kits make installation fairly
simple, and it often requires no more than a
day's work. Still, it takes some know-how and
skill with standard tools.
Cupolas with Weathervanes or Finials
If you're thinking of installing a cupola on
your roof, you might also consider whether you
would want to attach a weathervane or finial to
your cupola. Some of the more expensive cupola
kits give you this option. Either one can be the
crowing touch to your cupola. You would want to
attach it before you complete installation of
the cupola.
