You may not recognize the word “finial” right
off. It’s not one of those words that comes up
in ordinary conversation very often. Even so,
you’ve probably seen many finials in your life.
There may even be some on your house. They are
also called spires, or decorative tops put on
the corner posts of rooftops for a dramatic
effect.
While you obviously wouldn’t want heavy,
medieval-looking finials sticking up on the top
of your house, you might be attracted by the
modern version. The finial of today is elegant
and simple. Many are made of copper or bronze in
graceful designs that complement most modern
homes.
Some inventive gardeners use modern finials as
garden decorations. The smaller ones can be
attached to the top corners of fence posts to
create a unique look. Finials come in many
different sizes and shapes, and they range from
very simple to highly complex in style. You can
probably find any type of finial that you can
imagine.
