Gardening Made Simple and Easy

While many people would enjoy the beauty provided by an extensive garden they just can not commit the time necessary to maintain it in top condition.

You should never try to plant a full garden if you just have too many other things competing for your time such as a hectic work schedule or large family.

A new method of gardening called Xeriscaping may be just the answer for those folks who are too busy for a traditional garden. Xeriscaping has its origins in Colorado where water is often hard to come by. This minimal approach to garden gives you a great look without the constant maintenance and watering required by other types of gardens.

In order to encourage water conservations many places in Colorado actually offer free Xeriscaping lessons. Those who live in other areas which are facing a drought should consult with their local water provider about the availability of lessons in their area. These classes will be able to give you advice which is specific to your climate and region when it comes to types of plants and how much water they will require.

Many people think of a rock bed for a garden when they hear the term Xeriscaping. This concept is “zero scaping” and very different from what we are discussing here. The focus of “zero scaping” is to give you a maintenance free yard, which is why you often end up with nothing by rocks. Xeriscaping, on the other hand, will keep maintenance to a minimum but still result in a stylish and attractive yard.

Xeriscaping can be implemented with making a mess out of your yard. The main theory is to choose low maintenance plants and strategically place them in parts of your yard where they will thrive. Main concerns are providing the correct amount of shade for a plant and to create groupings of plants with similar water requirements.

You want to choose all your plants as the first step in your Xeriscaping makeover. All your plants should require minimal amounts of water. You don’t need to chose cacti; just avoid plants that need large amounts of water each day. Local plants will usually be your best bet.

Plant placement is the second most important part of Xeriscaping. You can save a lot of water by grouping plants that have similar water needs. Depending on the plants requirements it should be located where it can receive the ideal amount of sun, shade, and protection from the wind. You want to choose plants that have adapted to the various climate conditions of your yard. Xeriscaping is a great way to save water and time next time you renovate your yard.
